CHAPTER 4:YOUTH:THE WAY OF THE FAMILY

The writers is by Nur Jehan Mohamed in this article about the malaysian family faces many challenges today and serious action must be taken to address them. The future looks bleak for the Malaysian family,if the assesment of Professor Datin Paduka Jamilah Ariffin is any indication.Families in malaysia are generally shrinking as more people are getting married later,if at all and are choosing to have fewer children. Many are also living in an enviroment that may not be safe for children as the family institution moves away from the traditional extended family.Due to people getting married and having children later, many retiress would be supporting their childrend who would still be in school or university
In malayia,we are just above this level because Malays tend to have more than two children as opposed to non-malays who are having fewer offspring on average. These changes represent as shifting trend in demography.Malaysia used to be an agrarian society where the majority of the population was staying in villages. The west took three centuries to be come urban nations, which allowed their citizens a longer time to adjust. The family policy is a wide concept but considering that malaysia is a multiracial, multiraligious country where marriages come under two different courts,i have to think of all implications, right down to the definition of the family.
